Rick was born in New Zealand, but grew up in Hong Kong where the family moved during his early years. He started taking photographs and making short films in his teens using his family’s bellows camera and double 8 mm movie camera. He trained to become a photographer during his late teenage years and at the same time begun to write. In his early career he was editor in chief for some smaller media publications. He has later worked in many parts of the world as photographer, writer, film maker, TV producer, free lance journalist, and columnist. Over the years he learned to speak several languages and lived in several countries and cultures.

Some years ago he made Hong Kong his permanent home, to some degree in despair over the lack of freedom of speech, the political correctness, and the political influence and manipulation of the media in New Zealand.

He is a very private and a family man enjoying mostly to write about people and cultures and to document them in his photography.
